Final Results for Parkway Bowl 820 Scratch

Thursday saw the final week closing out the 2008-2009 season at Parkway Bowl’s 820 Scratch league. This league was one of the most interesting leagues I ever bowled in in that I didn’t bowl every week; I switched off every other week with Mike Stewart bowling as the fourth man on the team. I also didn’t start bowling in this league from week one but rather from week four so as a consequence I actually only bowled 48 games on the season. This was however enough games to book an average and I must say it wasn’t pretty.
Through the first 18 games of the season I was averaging a respectable 212, right in line with my historical average on house patterns but around December of 2008 I started falling apart and my average dropped off a cliff. By the end of January I was down to 204 before stopping the slide. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to regain much ground and I finished out the season with a fairly low 205 average. Though this was half a season it was still one of the lowest averages I’ve booked during my bowling years as an adult. For comparison sake the lowest adult average I ever booked was back in the winter bowling season 2004-2005 with the Mixers league at Sunset Bowl where I averaged 203 over the entire season. Blah! I never want to be down here again, even if it is only for 48 games.
Anyway, the fourth quarter of the season our team was quite competitive and it was very fun. For a time we were in first place for the quarter before finally failing in the last couple weeks of the league. We went 4-10 over the last two weeks and dropped into 4th place for the quarter and hence missing out on the roll-off for first place. Powering us during this quarter was Mike Stewart and Matt Kingery who both shot very well during the quarter… at least I wasn’t altogether bad I held average. I wish I could have gotten us a few more points with a couple good games sprinkled in the quarter but alas it was not in the stars.
All in all the league was a bit of a drag for the first half of the season as our team was firmly in last place but with a good second half we finished squarely in the middle of the pack… well, maybe a bit into the lower half of the field but hey, who’s keeping track.
What’s the best part of this league you might ask? It is exactly what went wrong with it; the average I booked will offer me a spot on a pretty good team next year if I choose to bowl in it again. We shall see if I take advantage of this plus.
